2nd-3rd GRADE CLASSES

ART

We will have adventures in art at least once a week. Lessons will introduce children to the vocabulary of art producing an understanding and appreciation of art. Students will be encouraged  to apply the concepts and techniques we learn in art to their own ideas and interests. Children will create with clay, crayons, acrylic and tempera paints, paper, oil pastels and watercolors. 

HISTORY

Our history exploration (Years 1–4) covers ancient history through modern history, but each course stops in different places and time periods to explore in depth. Some of our topics this year will include:

  • Ancient Rome 

  • Christianity in the Middle Ages            

  • The History of the Bible

  • The History of Islam

  • The Reformation

  • Slavery, The Civil War, and Modern History

 

LANGUAGE ARTS

We will use our Good and Beautiful Language Arts books in class and at home daily. Lessons will cover phonics, reading, writing, spelling, grammar usage, punctuation, and vocabulary. Students will work on two lessons in class and two lessons at home each week.

 

MATH

We will use our Good and Beautiful Math books in class and at home daily. We will aim to complete two lessons in class and two at home each week.

MUSIC

Music is a chance for every student to shine! With singing, movement, and some instruments, students will learn to appreciate music and begin to read and write in the languages of music. Students will participate in a Christmas program and a showcase at the end of the school year.

PE GAMES

In PE students will learn that exercise is, and should be, FUN! This class will be held outdoors whenever possible, in sun and snow. Students will learn how to play together and work on individual skills. Group games will be taught and laughter will be had during activities such as soccer, basketball, kickball, jump rope, four square, tag and many others. 

Requirements: 

  • Students will need clothing appropriate for exercise.

  • Sneakers are necessary when there isn't snow. 

  • Outdoor attire will be expected in cold weather, including snow boots. 

READING

Students will have an opportunity to read individually and in reading groups. We will also read some books aloud together.

SCIENCE

We use unit studies to explore key topics with weekly lessons. This year, our topics focus on paleontology and weather. 

SPANISH

Students will learn Spanish through fun classroom activities and at-home online learning. The class will develop the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Integrated music will help students with vocabulary and fluency while encouraging the joy of singing.

WORSHIP & BIBLE

We will worship God and pray daily to start our morning. Copy-work of a bible verse will be included in morning work time. We will also integrate Biblical truths and share stories from the Bible as we learn about events in history and principles of science.

REQUIRED MATERIALS:

  • All required 2nd-3rd grade curriculum will be purchased in bulk by EMERGE and billed to families.

PLACEMENT TESTS

2-3rd grade students who are ready to work at the 4th grade level for language arts or math will remain in their classroom, but may work up a level if they are prepared for increased independence. 2-3rd grade students who need to work at a lower level of language arts or math will move to the K-1 class for one or both subjects.
