Wood Carving
Mrs. Sarah Hay
.
This semester of art will be dedicated to wood carving! We will begin carving on soft blocks of basswood then move on to carving utensils including spatulas, textures, spreading knives, then spoons. We will learn knife safety, carving skills and techniques, wood properties, sanding and finishing. Students will be required to purchase their own tools (about $100) and there will be a class fee for consumables.

IMPORTANT NOTE: WE WILL BE USING SHARP TOOLS AND INJURIES MAY OCCUR.

REQUIRED MATERIALS:
-
Carving knife: morakniv carving knife 120
-
Clamps: TWO Jorgenson 6” bar clamps (screw to tighten). Can be any brand, this just what I prefer. I would choose a screw tighten vs. a trigger clamp, my opinion. Please don’t bring super duper long clamps into school even though you might have them at home.
-
NON DOMINATE hand protection. This could be a snug, WELL FITTING leather or kevlar glove, leather thumb guard, etc.
-
One gouge for scooping spoons. Please do NOT buying both of these.
-
Options:
-
The economical choice $20: beavercraft G7L/22 - Long Bent Gouge 7L (22mm)
-
If you want a lifelong tool $70: swiss made #8/22mm straight gouge
-
If you already have something in this range of size please ask me about using it!
-
-
-
pencil
-
paper
-
sometimes scissors
