Film Studies

Mr. Ben McEntee

Do you like movies? Sure! Who doesn’t? But the real question is, why do we like movies so much? Perhaps it is because movies reveal a great deal about ourselves, our world, our values, and our beliefs, as well as what shapes them. Perhaps we love movies so much because they offer a new perspective on the world around us. In the 21st century, it is essential to learn how to understand and critique the numerous images and messages that we encounter on the multitude of screens that compete for our attention in daily life.

In Film Studies, we will examine a range of films by one of the greatest American directors of all time, Steven Spielberg. We will explore some of his modern and classic movies and discuss the stories, themes, settings, characters, and cinematography that make this most engaging of art forms a powerful way to communicate ideas, values, and larger historical issues that resonate with all of us. In this class, students will view films, discuss films, and write responses on the films we watch.
