For English Composition our goal is to read like writers and write like readers. As such, we will study Strunk and White’s Elements of Style and read Ernest Hemingway’s Old Man and the Sea, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatzby, John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, and Maya Angelou’s I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. By course end, we will learn new vocabulary, have read four American classics, and have learned how to organize our thoughts in cogent, new ways. And, if lucky, some students may even discover their voice.
